Alcohol a major intoxicant used by motorists in Nigeria and Kaduna
particularly has shown to have portents tremendous danger for Kaduna
citizens thereby leaving the Honorable Assembly with no option but to
roll out strategies of regulating the activities of breweries in the
state since they are the main producers of Alcohol in heavy and large
commercial sizes.
Recently, Honorable Nuhu Goro Shadalafia moved a motion for the
restriction of alcohol at some places in Kaduna State. The motion was
graciously cosponsored by Honorable John Audu Kwaturu the Deputy
Speaker, Labari Shelly Tella, Aliyu Abdul Rahman Haruna, Mukhtar Isa
Hazo, Samuel Ubankato, Abubakar IDRIS Abdulahi, Mohammed Bello Haruna,
Salisu Isa, Aliyu Abdullahi and Obadiah Bako.
Sources say the House has taken its time to work on the bill
especially at security and Health committee levels.
And is set to fast tract the bill for speedy implementation.
At a moment, sources revealed that over 340 routes are been studied
for restriction. Researches by the special Marshals and partners
Departments of FRSC in Kaduna state, showed that 1241 people died in
Kaduna 2012 to 2015 as result of alcohol prone accidents.
Similarly, over 300cases of kidnapping and other criminal cases
paraded by the AIG in March this year were all using beer parlors and
joints as hideouts.
A study sponsored by IISTE Knowledge Sharing Partners shows that
between PZ to Samaru Zaria all areas 50 meters around Flyover,
Palladan, Aviation, Police gate, Railway, Unity Bank, MTD, Randa Kano,
Emanto, Samaru, FRSC gate, NUGA gate, CERT gate, Union Bank, Polo
club, Post office, PHCN , Zango, ABU gate, Zaria Hotel are alcohol
selling areas in Zaria.
Within the Kaduna metrolis from Mando last to Kawo, Hiyinbanki, Ungwan
Saraki, Lagos park Mando, all joints 50meters from the express,
Murtala Square area, Constitution road all areas 50meters away from
the road, all areas around stadium, station and NEPA round about
50 meters away are all alcohol prone areas and must also be restricted.
The Kabala West and Kabala Doki areas are completely restricted.
All areas 100 meters to Yakubu Gowon way should also be restricted.
Similarly, Southern part of the state should also be regulated in
terms of alcohol consumption and transportation.
Alcohol consumption and transportation in Kaduna represent 65% of its
consumption in Northern Nigeria.
Sources revealed that members of Kaduna Assembly resolved in motion
HM/FS/030 that "in view of multiple accidents and criminal activities
such as armed robbery and killings Kaduna State which are noticed
daily resulting from the sale and consumption of alcohol, the House
moved the bill be duly deliberated and call on all State agencies to
restrict same when directed by the State government"
